Rules of the comma
- Use it when you have an introductory phrase that has more than four words in it. Ex: When I returned home from the game last night, I talked with the parental units.
- Use it when you have a FANBOYS and a second subject. Ex: I love writing essays, and I can't wait to write my lit analysis.
- Use it when you use an appositive. Ex: My older sister, Lori, lives near Des Moines. Note how I could take out the word "Lori" and the sentence is still accurate since I only have one older sister.
- When you have a list of three or more items. Grammar freaks: The comma that goes before the conjunction is called an Oxford comma. Ex: I need to buy apples, oranges, and pears.
Rules of the semi-colon
- Use it when you have two complete sentences that you want to join to stress their connectedness. I'm looking forward to the game tonight; a fun time awaits!
- When you have a list that also involves commas. Ex: The team consists of Emily Peters, senior; Renee Huber, junior; Cody Schindler, senior; and Jesse Melchert, junior.
